Permit Requirements

Getting your driver's permit is an exciting milestone, but the process can feel overwhelming if you don't know what to expect. Here's everything you need, step by step.

  1. Age requirement

You must be at least 15½ years old but under 18 years old.

  2. Application process

    • Complete the application online or in person at your local DMV.
    • If you're under 18, your parents or guardians must sign the DL 44 form.
  3. Pass the knowledge test

Before you can receive your permit, you'll need to pass a knowledge test on traffic laws, road signs and safe driving practices. Try our free practice tests

  4. Provide proof of Driver Education

If you are between 15½ and 17½, you must provide proof of completing one of these driver education programs:

    • Driver Education Classroom Course (DL 400B)
    • Online Driver Education Course (DL 400C). Take ours online
  5. Show identification

You'll need to provide proof of your birth date and legal presence in the U.S.

  6. Submit personal information

Make sure you have your full legal name and Social Security number ready.

  7. Pay the application fee

The DMV application fee is currently $46. It's valid for 12 months and allows up to three attempts at the knowledge test. Check current DMV fees

  8. Photo, thumbprint & eye exam

At the DMV you'll have your photograph taken, provide a thumbprint and take an eye exam.

  9. When your permit becomes valid

Your provisional permit becomes valid once you begin behind-the-wheel training with an instructor, or once you turn 17½.

Know the rules

Minors' permit restrictions

  • Practice with an adult

You must practice driving with a parent, guardian, spouse, or an adult over 25 who has a valid California driver's license.

  • No solo driving

A provisional permit does not allow you to drive alone.

  • Motorcycle (M1/M2) permits

Motorcycle permits have extra restrictions on carrying passengers and riding on the freeway.

By following these steps and the permit restrictions, you'll be well on your way to becoming a safe, responsible driver.
